About the Project
The Dirty Lads elected to research the effects of fallopia japonica, better known as Japanese knotweed, on the Dog River.
As some may know, the Dog River is considered a pristine body of water, meaning there are very few pollutants in its waters. When one hears this, they may expect that the Dog River faces few threats in terms of alien species and contaminants. In truth, the Dog River faces an aggressive invasive species known in the western world as Japanese knotweed.
Those familiar with the invasive species recognize its appearance, however those unfamiliar with the appearance may confuse the plant with bamboo, which is an unrelated plant. The World Conservation Union consistently lists Japanese knotweed as “one of the world’s worst invasive species.” Some factors, such as its deep root systems and rapid growth, make the plant a difficult one to counter. At times, it is capable of destroying even concrete by processes comparable to ivy infiltration. To the Dog River, it is a sediment destabilizer, capable of causing massive erosion, especially of river banks, fragile or otherwise.

Dirty Lads
Starting from humble beginnings as just lab partners this group consisting of Brian Betz, Alonzo Hilario, Vincent Nguyen and Pat Ryan are now partners in the fight against the Japanese Knotweed by the Vermont's pristine Dog River. Over these next few weeks, starting from Oct. 4, Dirty Lads will be bring public awareness to the town of Northfield VT. This is the initial seed to plant to bring awareness and discover the most effective way to eradicate the weed for the people around the world.
